Mike Henderson Biography
Mike Henderson is one of the most popular and richest Songwriter who was born on January 16, 1954 in Independence, Missouri, United States. After being dropped from RCA, Henderson co-founded Dead Reckoning Records, along with Kevin Welch and Tammy Rogers. Dead Reckoning released his second album, Edge of Night in January 1996. CMT added the video for Henderson’s first single, which was a cover of Eddy Clearwater’s song “I Wouldn’t lay My Guitar Down”, in February 1996. Entertainment Weekly’s Tony Scherman gave the album a grade of B+. He wrote that Henderson was “a good songwriter even if his influences are a bit too plainly.” Parry Gettelman, of the Orlando Sentinel, gave the album five stars. He said that Henderson’s strong, slightly sandpapery voice was as soulful and twangy as it is. Billboard’s Chet Flippo also liked the album, stating that Henderson “manages to sound at once earth-worny and exuberant in an impressive lineup of original material as well as country chestnuts.”
Mike Henderson & the Bluebloods released their second album, Thicker Than Water, in January 1999 with John Barlow Jarvis replacing Reese Wynans on piano. Becky Byrkit of AllMusic gave the album four stars out of five, writing that “Henderson contributes a particularly clear vocal style with plenty of simultaneous character from both the blues and true-blue country music.” The album received a mixed review in People, which praised Jarvis’ “richly layered, hard-driving solos” but compared Henderson’s vocals to “the white-guy-trying-to-sound-soulful desperation of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi in their Blues Brothers mode.” Ed Kopp of All About Jazz gave the album a positive review, saying that “leader Mike Henderson is a highly capable slide guitarist, harpist, and singer, but the guy who makes this CD extra special is John Jarvis.” Tim Steil of the Chicago Tribune also gave the album a favorable review, stating that “whether playing Hound Dog Taylor-ish slide, or blowing harp lines that would make Little Walter smile, Henderson deftly conjures the sound of ’50s Chicago.”
Henderson toured with Mark Knopfler on his 2001 Sailing to Philadelphia Tour. In 2008, Henderson was one of the founding members of bluegrass group The SteelDrivers. He played mandolin, resophonic guitar and harmonica and co-wrote most of the band’s original songs. The SteelDrivers’ 2010 album Reckless was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011. Henderson left The SteelDrivers in December 2011.
In 1996, Henderson founded the blues band Mike Henderson & The Bluebloods. Reese Wynans was on piano, Glenn Worf was on bass, and John Gardner was on drums. The album First Blood was released by Dead Reckoning in October 1996. The album’s liner notes were written by Mark Knopfler. Entertainment Weekly’s Alanna Nash gave the album an A-grade, writing that “First Blood”‘s blistering, seamless Blues covers show [Henderson] is a remarkable guitarist/frontman.” People wrote that the combination of electric guitar, piano, bass, drums, and drums is so powerful, it’s not necessary to have any other instruments or original compositions in order to deliver a devastating blow. Linda Ray from No Depression also reviewed the album, giving it a positive review. She praised Henderson’s “masterful vocals and guitar” and stating that Henderson’s slide playing is probably illegal in many states. Radio airplay was given to the song “Pay Bo Diddley”.
RCA Nashville was attracted to Henderson’s demos. In March 1994, RCA signed Henderson, and his debut solo album, Country Music Made Me Do it, was released by the label. Entertainment Weekly’s Bob Cannon gave the album an A grade. He wrote that Henderson’s enthusiasm and guitar’s riveting tone give off enough sparks [to ignite] the songs. The Chicago Tribune’s Dan Kening gave the album three-and-a-half stars. He said that Henderson “downplayed his guitar skills on his first solo album in favour of his songwriting and strong voice and acquits him admirably.” Peter Cronin, Billboard’s editor, gave the album a positive review. He stated that Henderson brings a lot of attitude to the party and has a unique point of view.
The album’s first single, “Hillbilly Jitters”, peaked at number 69 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. When subsequent singles “The Want To” and “If the Jukebox Took Teardrops” failed to chart, Henderson was dropped by the label. “If the Jukebox Took Teardrops” was later a minor chart hit for Danni Leigh in 1998.
